why does my dog drink so much water?

Have you ever seen your dog drink a lot of water all of a sudden? Excessive dog bites, also known as polydipsia, are common among dog parents, and should not be overlooked.

The simple reason is that people or animals drink because it is dry. Their bodies become dehydrated and they have to slow down to make up for the loss. Since dogs do not sweat, without pockets on the nose and feet, they relieve body heat by breathing. When they take a deep breath, they lose water by evaporation. This loss of water is physical and can be easily remedied by drinking.

Excessive drinking of excess water, or for no apparent reason, can be a symptom of an illness. In various cases the body is unable to control the loss of water or at normal temperatures. This water loss should be remedied and dogs are too late to find balance.

There are many causes for excessive dryness in dogs, and some of them can be life threatening if not addressed in time.

If your dog suddenly needs a day or more, it is usually not a cause for concern. Dogs may drink excessively when they are very hot, tired, have a meal, or have just exercised. Highly active dogs and mammal dogs drink more than other dogs. If your dog has started to regularly flush the water bowl and hit the toilets, however, and has been going on for more than a few days, then it's time to check with your veterinarian.

Diabetes

Diabetes causes high blood sugar which may be due to insulin deficiency or insulin resistance. Excess sugar in the blood is excreted by the kidneys into the urine and inhales with it. In this case, excessive urination can cause excessive thirst in dogs. Diabetes is treated by changing the dog's diet and inserting insulin.

Kidney Disease

Dogs with kidney problems may not be able to concentrate their urine. They urinate a lot, and to avoid dehydration, they should drink plenty of fluids. Kidney disease is treated by changing the dog's diet and dealing with any causes of kidney failure, such as kidney or stone infections.

Cushing's Syndrome

Cushing's syndrome is caused when the adrenal gland overloads cortisol, either as a result of a tumor in the pituitary gland or an adrenal gland. Excess cortisol increases thirst, which in turn increases urination. Depending on the location of the tumor, Cushing's syndrome is treated with medication or surgery.

Diarrhea or Vomiting

Any dog that has diarrhea or vomiting loses its body fluids. To avoid dehydration, dogs that have recently suffered from diarrhea and / or vomiting may drink more than usual.

Pyometra
Pyometra is a medical term for an infected uterus. This condition occurs only in female dogs that have not been vaccinated. Pyometra is a life-threatening condition and requires immediate treatment, antibiotics and rehydration with fluid therapy.

Other Causes of Excessive Dryness in Dogs
A few other reasons your dog may be extremely thirsty include:

  • Dehydration
  • Liver disease
  • Cancer
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Medications, including steroids and diuretics
  • Heatstroke or hyperthermia
  • Diabetes insipidus
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Parasites
  • Hypercalcemia
In each case, the treatment varies according to the underlying cause.

Making an Appointment With Your Vet
If you see your dog drinking more water than usual, make an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. It can be helpful if you bring a urine sample and get ready to answer your vet's questions, such as what kind of food you have been feeding your dog, if there have been changes in your dog's diet or dog habits, any travel history and record of your dog's vaccination and protective care history. You may also want to write down any questions you have about your vet so you don’t forget anything.
