As well as irregular menstrual cycles, high testosterone levels can cause many skin symptoms in women with PCOS such as acne, hair loss, excessive growth of body hair, and skin abscesses called hidradenitis suppurativa.1 2

Healthy eating and lifestyle are the main treatments for PCOS. Here are five foods you can eat now to lower your testosterone naturally.

Best Foods for Handling PCOS Symptoms

Peanuts

Nuts of any kind are good for PCOS. Studies have shown that monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are found in nuts that have been shown to improve androgens and insulin and cholesterol levels in women with PCOS.

In a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, women with PCOS were randomly selected to receive walnuts or almonds for six weeks.3 Women who ate walnuts increased their levels of sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), a hormone binding to release testosterone, and almonds reduce free androgen levels.

Researchers conclude that eating peanuts positively affects androgen levels in women with PCOS.

The fish

There is some evidence regarding the effect of omega-3 diet on androgen levels in women with PCOS. In a study published in the Iranian Journal of Reproductive Medicine, 78 obese women with PCOS were randomly assigned to receive omega-3 (3grams per day) or placebo for 8 weeks.

Testosterone concentration was significantly lower in the omega-3 group compared to placebo, after supplementation. After the trial, the percentage of regular menstruation in the omega-3 group was higher than in the placebo group (47.2% vs. 22.9%).

Fish, in particular, cold-water fish, are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Examples of these types of fish include salmon, tuna, and trout.

Government guidelines recommend consuming two servings (3.5 ounces each) per week of cold-water fish to get enough omega-3.

Ittiye

Studies have shown that drinking tea (hot or cold) can help improve PCOS symptoms. Spearmint tea, for example, has been shown to have androgen-resistant effects on PCOS and may reduce hirsutism.

In a study published in Phytotherapy Research, women with PCOS were not scheduled to drink spearmint tea twice a day for one month and compared with placebo herbal tea. Total free testosterone levels are significantly reduced over a 30-day period in the spear tea group. Patient testing for submission of their hirsutism level was also reduced.5

Marjoram herbs are known for their ability to restore hormonal balance and regulate the menstrual cycle. A study published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Diet investigated the effects of marjoram tea on the hormonal profile of women with PCOS.

Women assigned to receive marjoram tea twice a day for one month were found to improve insulin sensitivity and lower levels of adrenal androgens compared to placebo tea.

Red mushrooms

Red Reishi is a Japanese mushroom that is believed to have many health benefits. In a research study examining the androgenic effects of 20 different types of mushrooms, reishi mushrooms had the strongest action in inhibiting testosterone.

Reishi mushrooms significantly reduced 5-alpha-reductase levels, preventing the conversion of testosterone into potent DHT (high levels of DHT are harmful factors in skin conditions such as rashes and baldness) .7

Flaxseed

Flaxseed has been shown to reduce androgen levels in men with prostate cancer. In a case study involving a 31-year-old woman with PCOS, flaxseed supplementation (30 g / day) reduced total and free testosterone. The patient also reported a decrease in hirsutism at the end of the study period.8

Further research on flaxseed support for hormonal levels in women with PCOS is warranted.

Trans Fats

Almost everyone knows that trans fats will not do good for your health. First, trans fats are made from the same vegetable oil that is high in PUFAs. But that is not all. The process of hydrogenation causes the oil to become very swollen, which greatly increases the risk of all chronic diseases.

The combination of high PUFAs and high inflammation will not benefit your testosterone. Therefore, you should avoid foods such as cakes, donuts, muffins, potato chips, fast food and margarine. Trans fats are present in many processed foods because they give life to a long shelf life in processed foods.

While reading labels, you should look for words like hydrolyzed and hydrogenated. Instead of referring to trans fats directly, dieters often use unfamiliar words to indicate the presence of trans fats.

Fried food

Fried foods have very high levels of PUFAs, which are very bad for testosterone. In addition, they tend to have high levels of sodium, which can lead to serious health consequences.

Whenever you fry anything, it usually dips a large amount of PUFAs.

So fried foods actually ingest a very high dose of PUFAs that reduce testosterone production and increase inflammation.

You will create a better world for yourself by avoiding fried foods with PUFA.

Used food

Any food item that comes with light packaging and good looks almost always contains trans fats and other artificial ingredients that can damage your health and testosterone levels. Apart from trans fats, processed foods also carry high levels of vegetable oils, which are a source of PUFAs.

When shopping for food, make sure you focus on buying a new product while avoiding processed foods. If you want to buy used food, make sure it is natural.
